European Commission outlines a package of measures designed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 55pc below 1990 levels by 2030
The European Commission has proposed a wide package of measures designed to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 55pc below 1990 levels by 2030. This 55 pc target was the bloc’s updated nationally determined contribution (NDC) to the Paris Agreement deal and represents the most ambitious 2030 emissions reduction plan proposed under that deal. The EU previously had submitted—and legislated for—a reduction of 40pc below 1990 levels by 2030. “We have a package that can take us to a goal which will set us on a path for climate neutrality by 2050” Timmermans, EC The new 55pc reduction by 2030 target will put the bloc on a pathway towards its stated goal of reaching net-zero emissions
