Sturgeon calls on Johnson to fast-track Acorn project
Scottish cluster was not awarded track-one status under UK government’s CCS scheme
Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon has written to UK prime minister Boris Johnson calling for him to award the Acorn carbon capture and storage (CCS) project track-one status “without delay”. As part of a ten-point plan outlined in December, the UK announced it would provide £1bn ($1.4bn) to support the development of industrial CCUS clusters around the country. Two industrial clusters will be established by the mid-2020s in the first phase, with a further two by 2030 in the second. Last month, the UK’s Hynet North West and East Coast Cluster were confirmed as the first low-carbon clusters that will receive state funding to develop CCS projects—meaning they have track-one status.
