The US Department of Energy’s latest energy ‘earthshot’ initiative will not completely solve the problem of achieving cost-effective grid-scale energy storage at scale, according to Andy Tang, vice president of global energy storage and optimisation at engineering firm Wartsila. The initiative is designed to reduce the cost of grid-scale long-duration energy storage by 90pc within the decade by accelerating breakthroughs in research and development.
