New Labor government wins support from Greens for bill to reach net-zero emissions by 2050
Australia’s newly elected Labor government looks set to pass a bill setting emissions reduction targets for 2030 and 2050 into law after the Greens said they would support the legislation. The bill requires Australia to reduce emissions by 43pc from 2005 levels by 2030 and to reach net-zero emissions by 2050—in line with the nation’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement. It requires the government to deliver annual statements on progress towards these targets and gives climate watchdog the Climate Change Authority (CCA) powers to advise the government on how to reach the targets and set future emissions reduction goals to be included in Australia’s NDCs.
